WWDC 2009 Predictions

This is probably more of a wish list than predictions of what will be announced at WWDC 2009. I really have zero insight into the Apple world, but I know what I want and have a few guesses.

Here goes.

Four Great Free Services You Are Likely Not Using

I am constantly amazed at the number of awesome services which are available (at least in some capacity) for free. Some like Twitter get tons of press. Others, provide a quality service to a loyal set of users but largely remain out of the spotlight.

Here are four services which you might not have heard of, but I highly recommend you look into.

Best Way to Share Links on Twitter

I have tried a couple of solutions for sharing links on Twitter and I think I have finally settled on a winner: bit.ly.

Bit.ly provides the five main things I was looking for in a link sharing/shortening tool:

Service Applications in the Cloud

Amazon announced the beta availability of Elastic MapReduce, which is essentially an automated Hadoop deployment.

Amazon Elastic MapReduce is a web service that enables businesses, researchers, data analysts, and developers to easily and cost-effectively process vast amounts of data. It utilizes a hosted Hadoop framework running on the web-scale infrastructure of Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) and Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3).

While I am sure there are folks who will find this very useful, I am hoping it is just the start.

Clickjacking

A meme of sorts is making it’s way through Twitter illustrating “Clickjacking”.

Facebook Likes

Looks like Facebook just added one of FriendFeed’s best features, “Like”.

We've just introduced an easy way to tell friends that you like what they're sharing on Facebook with one easy click. Wherever you can add a comment on your friends' content, you'll also have the option to click "Like" to tell your friends exactly that: "I like this." "I like this" | Facebook

I personally prefer the concept of “liking” over ratings. I think it is a much easier decision for users to participate when the choice is yes/no (or this case just yes) vs. on a scale of 1 to 5, what would you rate this item. I would love to see us eventually take this approach in Community Server as well.

Google AppEngine RoadMap Update

I came across this updated Google AppEngine roadmap via Dare’s post, Google App Engine on the road to becoming useful for building real web applications.

Maybe FeedBurner isn’t dead after all. I received the following email this morning:

The New White

Ahh, so many title choices, all of them would have haunted me in Google for many years. Anyway, I recently realized that four of my recent gadget purchases had one thing in common, they were all white.

SEO in Blogs is Overrated

I have spent way too much time in my life discussing SEO in blogs. For blogs like Engadget, SEO is a big deal. However, for the other 99.99% of people you are way better served creating great content and interacting with the visitors you already (yes, I can see there is a bit of chicken and egg) have visiting your site.
