Google Messages?

jaiku  I am sure Twitter will still get acquired, but I think they let the big one get away after Jaiku announced they had been acquired by Google.

Exciting news: Google has bought Jaiku today. What does that mean? First and foremost, we’re of course continuing to support our existing users. So fear not: your Jaiku phone, the Web site, IM, SMS, and API will continue to work normally.

Now it is a waiting game to see if Google does anything interesting (besides renaming it, Google Messages?) and to see if Twitter survives. Twitter has less features and does not have the backend Google can provide...but Twitter does have users. Personally, I think this is end of the road for Twitter. Many people already had accounts on both and even though it shouldn't matter, Google's acquisition just make Jaiku a lot more interesting; especially if they can keep the service more responsive than Twitter.
